NPA rebels seize 11 workers

From Tempo (Nov 14): NPA rebels seize 11 workers

DAVAO CITY – Eleven workers were abducted by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Tuesday afternoon in Barangay Daliaon, Toril here.

Report from Davao City Police Office (DCPO) said that the victims, who are workers of 3rd District Congressman Isidro Ungab, were working for a water system project in the area when allegedly forcibly taken by NPA rebels.

“They were released by the rebels after 24 hours,” DCPO spokesperson Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz said yesterday morning.

Captain Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry (Agila) Division chief information officer, said that additional troops from 84th Infantry Battalion were already deployed in the area.

Batchar said they are yet to determine the motive of the abduction but scored the NPA rebels for forcibly taking into custody the workers who were in the area to do their respective jobs in a water system project.

“It was a criminal offense and a violation to the rights of the workers. They were forced and under threat and were held against their will by the NPA rebels,” Batchar said.

Report from authorities also identified the leaders of the rebels as Danilo and Almira Rosete while the other members of the group were also recognized by witnesses as Danny and Jovy Diarog and Josephine Entero.

Around 60 armed NPA rebels rounded up the victims and forced them to proceed to the area of Sitio Katkat, Barangay Tungkalan.

After they were forcibly detained in the area starting Tuesday afternoon, the rebels released them by the afternoon of the next day, Wednesday.

No one was hurt among the victims, the report added.
