Policemen have repulsed an attack late Sunday by communist rebels in southern Philippines, but one officer was wounded in the fighting, reports said.
It said a still undetermined number of New People’s Army rebels were believed killed or wounded in the clash in Mati town in Davao Oriental province. Dozens of rebels tried to overran the police station, but officers put up a fight until reinforcements arrived.
The rebels, who arrived in stolen van and truck, fled under cover of darkness as security forces pursued them.
No other details were immediately available from the police or military about attack, but radio network dzMM reported that clearing operations were on going in the area where rebels escaped.
