From InterAksyon (Aug 1): Change of command for 'Tabak' Division cancelled but Army mum on reasons
The scheduled change of command for the Army’s 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division on Thursday was abruptly cancelled for still unknown reasons.
Brigadier General Jet Velarmino, was supposed to take over the unit from the acting division commander, his classmate in Philippine Military Academy “Sandigan” Class 1982, Brigaderi General Felecito Virgilio Trinidad Jr.
The source that first broke the news of the cancellation said: “We don’t know why it was hastily cancelled.”
Sought for comment, Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang confirmed the cancellation but could not give an immediate answer why.
No regular commander has been named to the division since the death of Brigadier General Daniel Lucero (PMA “Matikas” Class 1983) while diving on June 2.
The source, who sought anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the matter, said the selection process for a new 1st ID commander had reportedly become “too hot to handle” for the Board of Generals, led by Armed Forces chief General Emmanuel Bautista.
The Board had reportedly endorsed Trinidad for the position but Velarmino is supposedly backed by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin.
There is talk that Trinidad has been advised to wait for 8th Infantry Division commander, Major General Gerardo Layug, to retire next month and then take over the Eastern Visayas-based unit.
