Three soldiers were wounded when they clashed with some 15 suspected New People's Army (NPA) members in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, Wednesday dawn.
Belated report from the Agusan del Sur Police Provincial Office stated that a platoon of the Charlie Company of the 75th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army were conducting patrol at Kilometer 38, Barangay Bunawan Brook, in Bunawan town when they encountered 15 heavily armed men believed to be NPA guerillas around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.
The ensuing firefight lasted for 10 minutes resulting to the wounding of the three army soldiers. The names of the wounded army personnel were still being withheld as of press time.
Bunawan police and the other adjacent police stations were instructed by the provincial police office to conduct checkpoints and monitor the clinics and hospitals in their respective areas of responsibility for any patients with gunshot wounds.
Meanwhile, the military belied reports that they are conducting combat military operations in the hinter municipalities of Agusan del Sur province which caused the evacuation of some residents, particularly in Barangay Kauswagan, Loreto town.
Major Leo Bongosia, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Division in a radio interview, said that what is going on in the area is a "Bayanihan" activity spearheaded by the Philippine Army. The activity, according to Bongosia, was a consultative dialogue with the residents for the possible delivery of government services, projects and interventions to the impoverished sectors in the place.
The activity was an aftermath of a shooting to death of a village chief in Barangay Kauswagan by an armed group wherein the residents of the locality and the local government unit of the municipality requested for military presence in the area.
Bongosia said they are also verifying reports that the alleged evacuation in the area was initiated by a certain militant organization.
