To aid troops wounded in action toward speedy recovery, the Army General Hospital (AGH) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City formally joined the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)'s "Free Wi-Fi for All" program Tuesday.
The free Internet connectivity aims to uplift the morale of Philippine Army (PA) troops undergoing treatment, along with their dependents and visitors, aside from enhancing other communication functions of the AGH.
“His [President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s], marching orders was very clear. You connect the government to our citizens and you connect the government to its fighting men [and women] that are protecting our democracy,” said DICT Secretary and retired Army officer Gregorio Honasan II who graced the event.
The program was under the provision of Republic Act No. 10929, also known as the “Free Internet Access in Public Places Act”, wherein it listed public hospitals, health centers, and rural health units as some of the beneficiaries of the nationwide establishment of Wi-Fi sites.
Last July, the DICT launched the program at the Armed Forces of the Philippines V. Luna Medical Center.
1st Lt. Engelbert P. Callao, who is currently recovering from his injuries at AGH, said the project will be of great help in his recovery.
“Malaking tulong din talaga [yung project dahil] kahit na malayo sila [ang aking pamilya] parang malapit na rin, kasi nakikita namin yung bawat isa through video calls (The project will be of great help because even if my family is away, it feels like they are just nearby. It's because we see each other through video calls),” Callao said.
PA chief-of-staff Major Gen. Jesus B. Sarsagat, who hosted the event, said the project is one way of thanking the soldiers for their sacrifices in serving the country.
“It is also a way of making their stay at the hospital more comfortable,” he added.
