Oriental back to normal: Army

From the Visayan Daily Star (Aug 2, 2019): Oriental back to normal: Army

The peace and order situation in Negros Oriental is back to normal, Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, declared yesterday.

“Hopefully, we will be able to sustain it for the succeeding periods, Arevalo, who supervises the government security operations in the 1st district of Negros Oriental where majority of killings had taken place in the past two weeks, said.

In the wake of the spate of killings that victimized more than 20 persons, Governor Roel Degamo has activated the multi-sectoral Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict that aims to employ the whole-of-province approach in addressing the root causes of insurgency and ensure peace and order security in the province.

Arevalo said that all government agencies banded together to help in the recent incidents. So far, we have seen an improvement in the situation, he added.

Both the government and New People’s Army rebels have traded accusations on who wasbehind the series of killings in Negros Oriental, following the capture, torture and summary execution of four police intelligence operatives on July 18 in Brgy. Mabato of Ayungon town.

Four suspected NPA rebels had been arrested in follow-up operations of the military and police in Bindoy and Ayungon towns, with two of them linked to the brutal killing of the four policemen.

Arevalo had dismissed as “plain and simple propaganda”, the NPA claims that they were behind the killings, as he blamed the NPA of being responsible for some of the killings in Negros Oriental.

It was very clear that the NPA are behind the killings, following their admission in the capture and summary execution of four policemen in Ayungon, as well as numerous other innocent civilians in Negros, Arevalo said.

More than 300 Special Action Force troopers of the PNP are scheduled to arrive in Negros to prevent the escalation of violence.

Arevalo said they are still waiting for the deployment of SAF troopers in Negros Island, as of this time.

The spate of killings led to the relief of Col. Raul Tacaca as the provincial police director of Negros Oriental.
