Suspected New People's Army (NPAs) rebels bombed on Friday a proposed patrol base of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Magpet, North Cotabato.

“The base is up for construction in remote Purok 3, Barangay Bantac of Magpet,”
said Lt. Col. Rey Alvarado, the commander of the Army’s 72nd Infantry Battalion (IB), over a local radio station Saturday.

However, he said an improvised bomb went off at the site at about 3 p.m., scaring the villagers due to a possible rebel attack.

“Three to four suspicious-looking persons were sighted roaming around the area hours before the explosion,” he said.

Nobody was hurt in the attack that the Army believed was carried out by the NPA as part of its opposition to the putting up of the patrol base.

Alvarado said the CAFGU base was in response to the people's request for security from NPA harassment and extortion activities.

He maintained that the bombing will not stop the Army from establishing the CAFGU base for the benefit of the villagers.

The proposed detachment will be manned by residents of Barangay Bantac who qualified to become Army force multipliers.

The NPA, together with the Communist Party of the Philippines, is listed as a terror organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
