From the Visayan Daily Star (Feb 26): NPA claims burning of truck in Oriental
The New People's Army Leonardo Panaligan Comamnd (LPC) has issued a statement claiming responsibility for the burning of a cargo truck last week in Brgy. Budlasan, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.
Ka JB Regalado, LPC spokesman, said they acted on complaints of the workers who are receiving P140 a day as compensation, and P250 per ton, which are hardly enough for their basic needs, and the 5-6 lending scheme of Lito Alvillar, who owns the burned cargo truck.
Regalado said they have been trying to hold dialog with Alvillar since 2007 to answer the complaints against him. Instead of accommodating them, he had coordinated with the Philippine Army and National Police in Canlaon City, which only showed his disrespect to the revolutionary movement, Regalado added.
Lt. Col. Darryl Banez, 62IB commanding officer, said that about 10 NPA rebels, armed with with high-powered firearms, waylaid the cargo truckon Feb. 22, and ordered the driver and workers to get off
Investigations of the 62nd Infantry Battalion showed that the armed suspects told the driver and farm workers that they were only after the truck, the owner of which refused to pay revolutionary taxes.
Regalado justified the burning of the cargo truck, saying it was a form of punishment of crimes he had committed.
He enjoined those with similar cases to secretly coordinate with NPA to settle it.
The 62IB condemned this latest atrocity of the NPA in central Negros.
