3 Sayyaf militants yield in Sulu

From the Mindanao Examiner (Feb 26): 3 Sayyaf militants yield in Sulu

Three Abu Sayyaf militants, whose group has links with the Islamic State, have surrendered to the military in the southern Filipino province of Sulu, officials said Monday.

Officials said the trio - Hajat Abbang, Kirah and Sansi Jawad - also surrendered their weapons two rifles and a grenade launcher to the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 under Colonel Arnel Tolato.

The militants were followers of notorious Abu Sayyaf leader Alhabsy Misaya who was killed by soldiers last year.

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, said the militants are being interrogated by the military. He provided no details of the interrogation, but urged other Abu Sayyaf members to surrender and promised them a new life.

“I encourage all the other members of the Abu Sayyaf to surrender to the government and they will be given a chance to a new life,” he said.

The Abu Sayyaf is still holding over a dozen hostages, mostly seafarers, whose ships had been hijacked while sailing off the troubled region.
