The Philippine Army's 25th Infantry "FIREBALL" Battalion (25IB) recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components cache suspected to be concealed by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) in Barangay Mangayon, Compostela, Davao de Oro on July 22, 2023.
The 25IB's Bravo "Blazer" Company, led by 1Lt. Lowell D. Bagaipo, recovered the IED components cache containing 217 meters of detonating cords with attached 44 pieces of blasting caps, 166 meters of chrome wires, three meters of soldering lead, and a pair of rubber gloves, in a remote area about 400 meters away from 25IB's Post 4 Patrol Base and 240 meters from the main road.
The IED components are believed to be buried by the remnants of the dismantled CPP-NPA's Guerilla Front North, Sub-Regional Committee 1 (SRC 1), Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC), around 2020-2021, when combat operations were intensively conducted against the communist terrorist group.
The recovery of the IED components cache was part of 25IB's sustainment operations to maintain an Insurgency-Free Province of Davao de Oro. "These materials were intended to disrupt government projects and destroy government troops and personnel in the area," said Lt. Col. Michael T. Aquino, 25IB Commanding Officer.
On March 9, 2022, Victor Pagas Rollon alias "Go/Pong", Head Ordnance, Regional Operations Command (ROC), SMRC, an expert bomb maker, was arrested by the joint operations of Police Regional Office 11 (PRO11) and 1001st Infantry "PAG-ASA" Brigade (1001Bde) in Tagum City.
"We prevented the CPP-NPA's indulgence from possibly reasserting their presence in the area. Again, we have removed their capability to reestablish their presence, preventing more atrocities that can affect our people and the government's development of peacebuilding efforts in the area," Lt. Col. Aquino said.
"I commend the relentless efforts of 25IB to keep our people safe and maintain an Insurgency-Free Davao de Oro," said BGen. Felix Ronnie B. Babac, 1001Bde Commander.
Since the declaration of Davao de Oro in June 2022, there have been no recorded CPP-NPA activities in the province.
