Wounded NPA with High-powered firearm yields in Surigao del Sur

PLACER, Surigao del Norte – A wounded NPA fighter voluntarily surrendered at the headquarters of the Army’s 36th Infantry (Valor) Battalion in Brgy Puyat, Carmen, Surigao del Sur bringing along with him one high-powered firearm on Sunday May 7, 2023.

According to LTC MICHAEL REY S REUYAN PA, commander of 36IB, the surrenderee was identified as Jonas Maayo Angeles @ Remboy/Angel of Barangay Pantukan, Carrascal, Surigao del Sur who brought along one (1) M16A1 AR18 rifle and one (1) magazine loaded with ammunitions. Jonas is an armed NPA member who belong to the Sentro De Grabidad (SDG) of the weakened Guerilla Front 16 of the Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee of Komisyon Mindanao (KOMMID).

It can be recalled that an armed encounter ensued on April 15 in Brgy Esperanza, Carmen, Surigao del sur and on May 2 between the troops of 36IB and fully armed Communist-New People’s Army Terrorists (CNTs) in Brgy Maitom, Tandag City wherein the government troops recovered one (1) high powered firearm, ordnance items, medical paraphernalias and assorted personal belongings.

Alias Remboy said " Sa kadugayan nakahuna-huna nako ug desisyon nga mo hawa naku sa armadong grupo tungod kay lisod naman unya gikapoy naman ku, labi natong samaron ku nga nagka-engkwentro mi sa mga sundalo pitsa 15 sa Abril dito sa Brgy Esperanza, Carmen. Sukad ato, sige namig balhin-balhin bisan asang kalasangan og bukid, para lang na makalikay mi sa mga sundalo. Grabe ka lisod kaayo kay usahay batiun namig kagutom kulang naman ang amu-ang pagkaon, isa pa dili dayon makakuha ug supply nga pagkaon para sa amo-a tungod sa padayong operasyong militar.” (I finally decided to desert from the armed group because of tiredness and exhaustion I experienced after being wounded during our armed encounter with the government troops last April 15 in Brgy Esperanza, Carmen, SDS. Since then, our group frequently moved from one place to another in the hinterland areas to evade the operating troops and most of the time we experienced hunger and shortage of food because our supply lines were cut off due to the continuous military operation in the area.)


BGEN GEORGE L BANZON PA, Commander of the 901st Infantry (Fight ‘Em) Brigade commend the troops of 36IB under the leadership of LTC MICHAEL REY S REUYAN PA for their continuing effort in running after the remaining members of the terrorist NPA operating in the province of Surigao del Sur and he also recognized the effort and cooperation of concerned citizens for these accomplishments, particularly the Indigenous Communities for providing timely information every time they felt the presence of the CTGs in their communities. “This is a clear manifestation that the CTGs can no longer exploit the Indigenous People (IP) or Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs), I strongly believed that with the active cooperation of our IPs/ICCs, most especially the IP leaders we would be able to put an end to the countless atrocities perpetrated by the CTGs,” GEN BANZON added.

“I’m calling on the remaining NPA members to lay down their arms, refrain from hiding and surrender to the government authorities. We will continue the momentum of intensified focus military operations in areas where there are persistent reports of CTG’s presence. I am again appealing to you to abandon the armed struggle now before it’s too late, grab every chance or opportunity to desert from the armed group and lead a peaceful life”, the General said in his closing statement.
