Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay received his fourth star Wednesday, making him a full-pledged general and highest-ranking military officer.
“We remain dedicated to the performance of our mandate. This achievement is a realization of not only the sacrifices which we have already made, but also of the obligations we have yet to fulfill for our country and its people. I am hopeful that the AFP will continue working collectively to provide a secure and peaceful environment for every Filipino,” he said on his promotion.
Navy Captain Jonathan Zata, AFP public affairs office chief, said Gapay's fourth star was donned by Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana at the DND headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Aside from Gapay's family, also present during the ceremonies were senior military officers led by AFP vice chief of staff Vice Admiral Gaudencio Collado Jr.
Zata said the nomination for Gapay's promotion to full general was on September 2 and upon approval of the Commission on Appointments, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the AFP chief's promotion on October 5.
Gapay took over as the 54th AFP chief on Aug. 3, replacing Gen. Felimon Santos Jr. who bowed out from service after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.
Prior to his appointment as AFP chief, Gapay was the 61st commanding general of the Philippine Army and a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1986. He was also the class valedictorian.
