Police neutralized on Friday a suspected kidnapper listed in the police data as one of the 10 most wanted persons in Lanao del Sur.
Col. Madzgani Mukaram, director of the Lanao del Sur police force, identified the slain wanted person as Colopoy Ayonan, who has been linked to a series of kidnapping incidents and illegal drug peddling in the province.
Police and elements of the 82nd Infantry Battalion of the 103rd Infantry Brigade were to serve a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 9 in Marawi City against Ayonan and a relative, Khadafi Ayonan, when both resisted, eventually resulting in a brief shootout.
“A tip led us to the suspects’ hideout at the Poblacion area in Marawi City,” Mukaram said.
He said Khadafi, a former barangay chairman in Piagapo town in Lanao del Sur, fled while Ayonan was trading shots with the law enforcers.
Ayonan died in the shootout while Khadafi’s son, Asnawi, a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit, was arrested and detained for preventing the arrest of his father and possessing a rifle.
In Ayonan’s home, police found two 9mm pistols, an M16 assault rifle, and two sachets of suspected shabu.
A manhunt had been launched against Khadafi.
