MANILA -- Senator Ronald dela Rosa on Tuesday assailed the communist rebels for their "insincerity" during peace talks, warning that the Reds' willingness to resume talks with the government could just be another ploy to give space to rebels who are cornered by state security forces.
“Lokohan lang peace talks na yan. Si Joma (Sison) nag-offer naman ng peace talk dahil naiipit na, dahil ang armadong pwersa sa bansa naiipit na (The peace talks are just a sham. Joma again offered to talk peace because their armed troops in the country are cornered),” dela Rosa said in an ambush interview.
“Ginagamit lang nila ang peace talk na yan para lang makaluwag yung fighting space ng kanilang mga armado sa baba dahil naiipit na sa gobyerno; at para makapasok sa lugar na di nila napapasok para makapag-recruit, makapag-consolidate, mag-mobilize, kumuha ng kailangan nila (They are just using the peace talk to loosen up the fighting space of their ground troops who are already being cornered by government forces; and so that they can also enter other areas to recruit, consolidate, mobilize and replenish supplies),” he said.
The former chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said if it is up to him, peace talks with the Reds should not be resumed because of this insincerity.
“Pero (But) we have proven time and time again kung sino ang hindi (who is not) sincere, it's them, not the government. Sinsero ang gobyerno, pero sino ba ang sumisira sa (The government is sincere, but who is wrecking the) peace talk? Sila lang, dahil nga (It is only them, because) they are not sincere,” dela Rosa said.
Dela Rosa was reacting to President Rodrigo Duterte's announcement that he would be sending Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to talk peace with communist founder, Sison.
Though he did not elaborate on the impending dialogue between Bello and Sison, President Duterte said he cannot close the door on the possible resumption of talks with the communist movement as the nation is “longing for peace.”
The peace negotiations between the national government and the National Democratic Front (NDF) have been intermittent since it began in 1986.
Duterte had a relatively warm relationship with the communist rebels during his first months in office, but he was enraged by New Peoples’ Army’s (NPA) continued attacks against government troops despite ongoing peace talks.
On Nov. 23, 2017, Duterte signed Proclamation 360, formally terminating the peace talks with the communist guerillas.
In December 2018, Duterte signed Executive Order 70, instructing the national task force tasked to end local communism to develop measures enabling local chief executives and directing local peace bodies to conduct local peace talks with the communist insurgents.
