CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – The municipality of Esperanza in the Province of Sultan Kudarat handed over 30 loose firearms to 2nd Mechanized Infantry (Makasag) Battalion on Monday, December 11, 2019 at the Sangguniang Bayan Session Hall of the town.
The effort is part of the intensified campaign against proliferation of loose firearms in the area of operation to maintain peace, security and order in the community.
According to Lt. Col. Omar V. Orozco, Commanding Officer of 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, “the handover of loose firearms to the unit was the result of effective collaboration of local leaders and increasing confidence to our security forces.”
He also lauded the effort of 23rd Mechanized Infantry Company under the outgoing Commanding Officer, Cpt Librado R Olunan Jr. and the cooperation of barangay officials in surrendering the said loose firearms.
“I gratefully commend all the barangay officials of Esperanza for the demonstration of your commitment and sincerity to help the unit in achieving a peaceful and secured community. I presume that this significant event will continue to gain more support in this locality, and for that, we will ensure that the campaign against loose firearms is continuing commitment of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion and to be intensified in the battalion area of operation until the very last piece of undocumented firearm is recovered,” Lt. Col. Orozco said.
The 30 loose firearms were handed over by Esperenza Mayor Charles Federic R. Ploteña and members of the municipal’s Peace and Order Council.
The firearms surrendered were the following 8 cal. 30 Garrand rifles, 4 cal. 45 Thompson sub-machine guns, 1 cal. 30 Bolt action rifle, 14 locally made 12-gauge shotguns, 1 locally made M203 grenade launcher, one 20-gauge shotgun, and 1 Springfield rifle with various magazines and ammunitions.
Joint Task Force Central Commander, Maj. Gen. Diosdado C. Carreon, commended the local governments unit for their participation in the government’s campaign against proliferation
“This surrender of loose firearms will boost the peace and order situation as this help shun violence and criminalities in the municipality of Esperanza,” the Commander stressed.
The loose firearms are now in the custody of 23rd Mechanized Infantry Company for safekeeping prior to turnover to higher headquarters.
