MAASIN CITY, Dec. 28 (PIA) -- More than 300 barangay officials of this city showed up and participated in a program organized by the Peace, Law Enforcement, and Development Support (PLEDS) cluster of the city task force on ending local communist armed conflict (CTF-ELCAC).
Also attending the program and indignation rally held at the city gym Thursday, Dec. 26, were men in uniform, the Philippine Army, the PNP of the city and province, the BFP, BJMP, city heads of offices and officials led by Mayor Nacional Mercado.
In an interview shortly before the start of the activity, Police Lt. Col. Mark Nalda explained that the program and rally was simultaneously held nationwide under orders of the DILG to coincide as a counter move against the 51st founding anniversary of the communist New People’s Army.
During the program, Mayor Mercado denounced detrimental actions of the rebel group that caused problems to the community and society, as he enjoined the barangay officials not to support them, instead report them to police authorities.
After his talk, Mayor Mercado led the signing of a pledge of commitment printed in large tarpaulin, a vow expressing full support to task force ELCAC, and denouncing the CPP-NPA-NDF.
He was joined by City Vice Mayor Maloney Samaco, City Councilor Zaldy Olita, heads of BFP, BJMP, PNP, and city heads of offices, including the participating barangay officials.
Having affixed their signatures and the photo ops done, the crowd went outside in the street fronting the city hall, carrying placards with messages condemning the atrocities of the rebels and calling on founder Jose Ma. Sison to come back and face his crimes.
The hammer and cycle flag of the NPA was then burned to show that peace-loving people of the city would never embrace the ideology advanced by this kind of group. (LDL/MMP/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
