COTABATO CITY: The town of Isulan in Sultan Kudarat stayed on heightened alert following the discovery of another improvised explosive device (IED) near the cadaver of a shooting victim Tuesday night.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are digging into the recovered IED and its connection to the shooting of two men in Barangay Kenram in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.
Lt. Col. Modesto Carrera, newly designated police chief of Isulan, said the two men were seen sitting on a parked motorbike beside the highway in Purok Don Juan, Barangay Kenram when a riding in tandem arrived and fired at them.
Responding PNP officers found one of the two men on the parked motorbike dead on the roadside, his companion managed to escape but not after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Carrera said responding police found the improvised bomb near the crime scene.
“We are still determining if the IED was carried by the two shooting victims,” Carrera said.
“We would like to know if there is connection between the shooting victims and the IED found nearby,” he added, while refusing to name the two victims.
AFP and PNP bomb experts safely deactivated the IED. The wounded is now getting medical attention in an undisclosed hospital.
Carrera also appealed to the public to ignore threats of another bomb attack posted on spread social media like Facebook.
Eight persons were injured when an IED exploded in front of the town’s public market on Saturday in what police believed was carried by an extortion group.
Prior to last Saturday’s bombing, Isulan Mayor Marites Pallasigue received a phone call from the extortion group demanding P250,000 a month from the local government, so the town would be spared from bombing.
