CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – Officials of Lambayong town in Sultan Kudarat province turned over 16 assorted firearms and three explosive materials to authorities on Tuesday, the military said.
In a statement released Thursday, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (ID) said the loose firearms were handed over to the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade based in Lambayong.
Colonel Efren Baluyot, 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade (MIB) commander, said the campaign against loose firearms seeks to "maintain peace and security in the community" and to ensure a safe and secured May 13 midterm elections.
The firearms were handed over by the town's Association of Barangay Councils president Andy Agduma, along with the chairmen of the 26 barangays of Lambayong.
Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Iyog, 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion commanding officer who received the firearms, lauded the village officials' "commitment and sincerity to help us in achieving a peaceful, secured and orderly community".
The surrender of the loose firearms would also "help reduce the recent killings and violence in the municipality,” Baluyot said.
The firearms included a Remington .30-caliber sniper rifle, four 12-gauge shotgun, one 9-mm pistol, an M2 Carbine rifle, two .45-caliber pistols, two .38-caliber pistols, an M79 grenade launcher, a 22-mm rifle, and other types of guns as well as explosive materials consisting of three hand grenades and two rifle grenades.
Outgoing Lambayong Mayor Ramon Abalos of Lambayong praised the military for the disarmament program, describing it as a "tool to attain peace" in the town.
“I urge the Army and the police to continue this project as it ensures the safety of the people,” Abalos said.
To date, more than 2,000 loose guns have been voluntarily surrendered to the 6th ID by civilians in the provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and North Cotabato, the military said.
