The members of the BTA swore, in part, thus:
“I shall perform my duties and responsibilities entrusted to me as part of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with utmost dedication, devotion, honesty, justice, integrity, completely devoid of all the evils in governance especially graft and corruption.”
Simply put, graft is acquisition of gain in dishonest or questionable ways while corruption is the misuse or the abuse of public office for private gain.
Among the consequences of corruption are the following:
a) It leads to poor quality of government services;
b) It produces substandard quality of government projects;
c) It lowers the effectiveness and efficiency of government performance;
d) It breeds distrust in one another, thereby destroying the culture of trust;
e) It undermines cultural traits and institutions;
f) It discourages investors;
g) It weakens respect for the duly constituted authorities that in turn leads to innumerable serious problems that deprive government of public support, and
h) It reinforces massive poverty.
To attack the problems of graft and corruption, our leaders must lead by example and possess a strong political will.
People look up to their leaders as role models. More than what they say, what the leaders do greatly influence the followers.
Besides, any campaign against graft and corruption must be well-coordinated and uncompromising. Those who will be found guilty must be prosecuted without fear or favor and put behind bars to prove once and for all that the government is determined and serious in its campaign.
