The Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade reported yesterday that a couple was among the three suspected New People’s Army rebels killed in an encounter Wednesday with the 79th Infantry Battalions soldiers in Sitio Banwa Minatay, Brgy. Marcelo, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, identified them as Peter “Mark” Dayanan, with aliases of Yusin and Kent, squad 1 leader of Platoon Mars/Robinson of Northern Negros Front, his wife, Mae, and Sulpicio Hernan Jr., both also members of the same NPA unit in northern Negros.
Army soldiers recovered M16 and AK 47 assault rifles, five magazines of M16 ammunition, seven AK 47 magazines also with ammunition, three rifle grenades, four M4 magazines with bullets, two hand held radios and 12 back packs containing personal belongings.
Arevalo also reported that four of the 12 communist rebels were also reported by residents to have been injured, three of them seriously, as they were seen being carried away by their fleeing comrades.
On the government side, a certain SSgt. Edwin Gardose was also injured. He is now in a stable condition, Lt. Col. Emelito Thaddeus Logan, 79th Infantry Battalion commander, said.
Logan said the encounter with about 12 communist rebels ensued when his troops responded to complaints of the populace about rebel extortion activities in the area.
He added that the gunbattle lasted for about 30 minutes and the rebels scampered in various directions leaving behind their three slain comrades and firearms, among other war materials, at the encounter site.
On April 15, Army soldiers also overran a rebel camp in Bindoy, Negros Oriental, that also resulted in the recovery of two M16 and M4 automatic rifles, and other war materials.*
