MARAWI CITY -- To further enhance the role of mothers in preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE) as well as in influencing good deeds among young Maranaos, the Institute for Autonomy and Governance (IAG) conducted a two-day workshop for the United Mothers of Marawi Initiatives (UMMI) Core Group, injecting family-based approaches in the development of age-appropriate, culture-sensitive and family-based modules on PCVE.

The workshop, which was held last March 3 and 4, sought to establish a family-based framework anchored on the specific narratives, aspiration, and the cultural-religious ideals of the Maranao community as its core principles.
According to the mother-participants, there is a need to craft a women-led module on PCVE that will introduce a deeper understanding and appreciation among the young on the roles of mothers in recognizing their vulnerability to being recruited by violent extremist groups in Marawi City and its neighboring communities.
"Masaya kami na may ganitong workshop para sa aming mga nanay. Lahat kami na nandito concern sa community namin especially what happened to Marawi, yung experience ng Marawi Seige. It is a moving lesson para sa amin to do our best to contribute whatever we can, to help rebuild our homeland," said Aquisah Barazar, one of the participants during workshop.

Also, the workshop sought to deepen a shared understanding of the responsibilities of the family in Maranao communities in supporting the development of children to shield them from wrong ideologies.

Furthermore, in order to create a youth-responsive strategy in countering violent extremism, IAG is implementing Enpold Bangsamoro Politics for Peace Phase 2 project, in partnership with the Bangsamoro Women Services Center (BWSC), Institute for Bangsamoro Studies (IBS), Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), Organization of Teduray and Lambangian Conference and Zamboanga Basilan Integrated Alliance, Inc. (ZABIDA), and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - Australia.
The project includes a consensus building for developing a module on family-based approaches on PCVE in support of Marawi recovery and rehabilitation.
