From the Visayan Daily Star (Mar 8, 2019): Hitman dies in shootout
An alleged New People’s Army hitman died yesterday, while another was injured, in a shootout with a police officer, whom he and his companions tried to disarm of his gun, in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental.
P/Col. Raul Tacaca, provincial police director of Negros Oriental, yesterday said that four armed suspected NPA assassins tried to disarm Police Senior Master Sgt. Humphrey Teves, at the Tabuan market in Brgy. Bantolinao, Manjuyod.
Teves, however, managed to shoot first, and hit two of the four suspects, who were reported by witnesses, to be in their early 20s, Tacaca said.
He added that after a brief gun battle, one of the rebels, who was fatally hit, was left behind by his comrades.
One of three fleeing assassins was also hit in the leg, Tacaca also said.
However, the identity of the slain rebel, has not been established, yet, But he was reported to be a member of the NPA Special Partisan Unit, Tacaca added.
On the other hand, patrolling soldiers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion discovered and seized an abandoned NPA camp on Monday in Sitio Upper Balyo, Brgy. Tagucon, Kabankalan City. Negros Occidental.
The rebel camp that could accommodate about 20 persons, is believed to have been abandoned five to 10 days ago, the 62IB said.
