From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 2): PH signs loan for new Coast Guard vessels
The Philippines has secured a P6.4 billion Japanese loan for large coast guard vessels.
Department of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said the loan would be for two large 90-meter vessels. This is on top of an earlier Japanese loan for the acquisition of 10 45-meter patrol ships.
Dominguez said the loan has a maturity period of 40 years would greatly enhance the maritime
capability of the Philippine Coast Guard. The signing were witnessed by President Rodrigo Duterte and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, Japan last October 26.
The 90-meter vessels would be the biggest patrol ships of the Philippine Coast Guard, The current largest PCG vessels are the two 56-meter San Juan class patrol vessels which were sourced from Australia.
The country in August received the first of the 10 vessels funded from a Japanese Official Development Assistance loan. The first ship is BRP Tubbataha, one of the 10 coast guard ships classified as a modern Multi-Role Response Vessel (MRRV).
These MRRVs are capable of maritime search and rescue, pollution control, sea patrol, transport and rapid response platforms during disasters.
Aside from the ships, the country will also be a recipient of a P280-million Japanese grant to the Philippine Coast Guard.
The PCG will receive one 20-meter high speed vessel and 14 high-speed patrol boats.
