Duterte told reporters on Tuesday evening, November 1, that he and Malaysian leaders, led by prime minister Najib Razak, will discuss measures to address the presence of the terrorists passing through Strait of Malacca, an important waterway between Malaysia and Indonesia.

“We have a lot to talk about piracy in Malacca Strait, kidnapping, criminality. It’s very important that Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines talk about these. Once and for all, come up with solution. We share the same coastline,” he said.

Duterte said the security threats there paralyzed the trade and commerce that it is “important that arterial channel there be safe and get rid of the troublesome guys.”

He added that the presence of the terrorists in Sulu, the Abu Sayyaf’s foothold, is worrisome, which poses an even greater threat to the present generation if not dealt with immediately.

When asked if he thinks there are other terrorists nearby Sulu seas, Duterte said “I think so, that’s the next problem. I said it is coming around and I would like to warn the country that we have this looming problem ahead but I do not want to cause unnecessary alarm but it is gonna be one of the biggest challenges that this generation will face.”

The president earlier discussed joint security measures with Indonesia, which he said was affirmed by President Joko Widodo.

Duterte confirmed that he will also head to Thailand after his visit to Malaysia to pay respects to the revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died recently.

“It’s very important that we show our solidarity,” he said.
