Malacañang assured Tuesday that the government is addressing
the concerns of the United States
regarding reports of extrajudicial killings of drug suspects in the Philippines .
”We are addressing it from our side,” Presidential Spokesman
Ernesto Abella said in a press briefing.
State Department spokeswoman Anna Richey-Allen on Monday
expressed concern over reports that drug-related killings have already reached
more than 1,500 since President Rodrigo Duterte took office last June 30.
”We are concerned by reports regarding extrajudicial
killings of individuals suspected to have been involved in drug crimes in the Philippines .
The United States believes
in the rule of law, due process, and respect for universal human rights, and
that these principles promote long-term security,” the US official
said.
Abella said the mere fact that National Police chief, Dir.
Gen. Ronald dela Rosa was attending the
ongoing Senate inquiry into the extrajudicial killings is clear proof that the
government is addressing the issue.
”I think he has also made reference to the fact that
whatever incidents that have serious concern are already being addressed,”
Abella said.
In the Senate hearing on Tuesday, dela Rosa
told the justice committee chaired by Senator Leila de Lima that police have
already arrested 10,153 drug pushers and confiscated PHP2.5 billion worth of
illegal drugs.
Dela Rosa reported also to the senators that 718 drug
dealers and pushers were killed in legitimate police operations while more than
600,000 users have surrendered to the authorities.
The Philippines
has at least 3.7 million drug users, according to the police chief.
President Duterte has promised he will not stop his
intensified campaign against illegal drugs until all drug apparatuses are wiped
out.
