Two Army soldiers were wounded in a 10-minute firefight when a joint military and police pursuit operation encountered the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Bukidnon, Army reports reaching here Thursday said.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the spokesperson of the army 8th Infantry Battalion (8IB), said that the encounter took place last Tuesday in a the village of Manalog in Malaybalay City, two days after the NPA captured two police officers in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon last Sunday.

He said that the government troopers stepped on an improvised explosive device while pursuing the retreating NPA rebels, where the two soldiers got wounded.

Tagros did not name the soldiers who were reportedly brought to a military hospital in Cagayan De Oro City.

The police and the military pushed through the dense jungle along the boundaries of Malaybalay City and Impasugong, Bukidnon in a bid to rescue the two police officers who were abducted by the NPA last Sunday.

Tagros said that the NPA rebels abducted SPO1 Warren Coñales and PO3 Edwin Castor at gunpoint in a checkpoint set up by the rebels in Impasug-ong Sunday morning.

Last Monday, the military deployed an elite K-9 team to track down the rebels in the mountains of Bukidnon.

The encounter was the first since the military deployed an elite K-9 team to track down the rebels in the mountains of Bukidnon in a bid to rescue the kidnapped police officers, Tagros said.
