From BreakBulk Events and Media (Mar 23): BigLift Loads Australian LCH
Project cargo specialist Biglift Shipping has loaded a cargo of three navy heavy landing craft, or LCH, for delivery from Australia to the Philippines.
The vessels included the decommissioned HMAS Balikpapan, HMAS Wewak and HMAS Betano. The HMAS Balikpapan measured 44.5 meters in length, with a beam of 10.1 meters and a draft of 1.9 meters, and was the lead ship of the Balikpapan class of LCH.
“Last week our Happy Buccaneer loaded three navy landing craft. These vessels were donated by the Australian navy to the Philippine navy. Two vessels were loaded in Darwin and one in Cairns. All three with destination Cebu – Philippines,” a Biglift spokesperson said.
The LCH have a full load displacement of 503 tons and a standard displacement of 316 tons.
“We will be able to accelerate delivery to different parts of the Philippines, and more promptly send aid, supplies, and other heavy equipment such as bulldozers, which are needed for clearing and relief operations,” President Benigno S. Aquino III said during his last state of the nation address.
