The town councilor and the policeman who were wounded in an
attack by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on a police patrol jeep while on the
way to a remote village in Daraga, Albay on Friday morning, are now recovering
in the respective hospitals here where they brought, a Philippine National
Police (PNP) official said.
Councilor Mark Magallona and Senior Police Officer 4 John
Mallorca of Daraga town are now safe and well, according to Police Senior Supt.
Marlo Meneses, PNP Albay provincial director.
Meneses said a team of NPA rebels waylaid a police convoy at
about 9:25 a.m. Friday while negotiating a road in Barangay Bigao, a hinterland
village in Daraga town, wounding Magalona and Mallorca who were with the
group.Magallona was rushed to the Aquinas Hospital here while Mallorca was
immediately taken to the Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital for
medical treatment.
Four policemen at the patrol car were able to retaliate and
return fire as other responding policemen were quick to provide reinforcement
that forced the attacking NPA rebels to immediately flee the fight scene.
According to Meneses the police convoy was providing
security to a barangay consultation forum led by Daraga Mayor Gerry Jaucian and
the members of the town council.
Magallona came along and rode in the police patrol jeep
after he was reportedly left behind by his companions who were with the convoy
led by Jaucian going to the site.
Barangay Bigao is a remote village, which is reportedly a
rebel-infested area, some 20 kilometers away from the town proper.
