A top military said the grenade throwing incident that occurred early Tuesday in Jolo, Sulu was perpetrated by new recruits of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) sent on a test mission.

Col. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Group Sulu commander, said latest investigation report showed the number of victims rose to 11, including two children, from the initial figure of seven.

Arrojado said based on information they gathered, the group composed of six members led by Aljun Adun, a follower of Ajang-Ajang under ASG sub-leader Ninuk Sappari.

He said the group were monitored a day before the incident at the residence of Ining Jawhari Adun in Sitio Baunoh, Barangay Bangkal, Patikul.

Arrojado said the group was sent to carry out liquidation mission with soldiers and policemen as well as uncooperative civilians as their main targets.

The official said they have strengthened the conduct of checkpoints in all roads from and to Jolo in coordination with the police “for possible apprehension of the suspects.”

He said the truck of the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion was returning to Camp Bud Datu in Barangay Tagbak, Indanan after fetching soldiers to the headquarters of the 35th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Liang, Patikul purposely to take promotional examination.

He said the suspects riding tandem on a motorcycle tailed the truck and hurled a fragmentation grenade towards military vehicle.

However, he said the grenade landed and exploded near a group of bystanders as the suspects missed their main target, the military truck. The suspects sped off immediately.

The victims were identified as the following: Hassan Linsani, 42; Rodelio Gitgit, 40; Jayjay Gitgit, 10; Jeremy Boon, 52; Marry Boon, 32; Elina Misuari, 40; Rofya Raffi, 32; Ibno Abdulmain, 22; Ferdauza Rajek, 24; Sitti Kausar Assadi, 51; and, Mohammad Heshum Alkhimar, six.

Arrojado said the troops from the Jolo Internal Defense Force (JIDF) rushed to the blast site and in coordination with police assisted in transporting the victims to the hospital.
