From the Philippine Star (Jun 8): 4 NPA rebels surrender in Southern Mindanao
Four New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas surrendered to the different units of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division (ID) in Southern Mindanao over the weekend.
The new surrenderees brought to 82 the total number of rebels who returned to the folds of the law since January.
Two of the guerrillas, aged 18 and 19, surrendered to the Army’s 84th Infantry Battalion yesterday. They cited the difficulty in living in the mountains as the reason for their surrender.
The two, who were recruited in Davao City, were members of the NPA’s Pulang Bagani Command 2 of the Southern Mindanao regional command.
Also yesterday, another rebel gave himself in to the 73rd Infantry Battalion in Jose Abad Santos town in Sarangani. The man was a member of the NPA’s Front-71 operating in the region.
According to the Army’s 10th ID, it was hardship and starvation that drove the rebel to leave the underground movement.
Last Friday, an NPA rebel surrendered to the 68th Infantry Battalion in Davao Del Norte, bringing with him his rifle.
