Two senior New People's Army (NPA) guerillas collecting "revolutionary tax" from traders in Magpet, North Cotabato and surrounding towns yielded to the military Sunday.
Roger Antipuesto and Ryan Calio surrendered clandestinely to the Army's 57th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Sallab west of Magpet, through the joint intercession of community elders and local officials.
Antipuesto and Calio turned in an M16 assault rifle each.
The two NPA rebels led a notorious group that mulcted money from peasants and traders in Magpet and neighboring towns in North Cotabato.

The suspects also confirmed that a group of NPA guerillas trained in fabrication of improvised explosives was behind the spate of recent roadside bombings in Magpet and nearby towns, meant to compel local folks to shell out "protection money" on a regular basis.
They told reporters they have grown so tired of moving from one hinterland to another to elude pursuing soldiers.
Antipuesto said aside from their role of collecting money from local folks to sustain their group's operation, they also acted as medics when their unit, which is under the NPA's Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, initiated tactical maneuvers against military forces in North Cotabato.
