From the Manila Standard Today (Jul 25): Sulu donates speed boat to PH Marines
JOLO, Sulu—Governor Abdusakur Tan Jr. donated recently to the Second Marine Brigade a 600-horse power Malaysian-made speed boat to boost the partnership between the local government and the armed forces.
Brig. Gen. Martin Pinto, brigade commanding general, received the 32-foot watercraft joined by Brig Gen. Orlando de Leon, deputy chief of the Zamboanga City-based Western Mindanao Command and other local executives.
Pinto also thanked Tan’s father, Vice Gov. Abdusakur Tan Sr., for helping strengthen “maritime law enforcement operations (in) the Tausug-populated province and its various island municipalities”.
Along with De Leon, chief of Joint Task Force BASULTA (Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-Tawi), Pinto welcomed the donation in view of rampant illegal activities such as kidnapping, piracy and smuggling.
Local police and the marines are conducting operations amid renewed activities of the Abu Sayyaf Group.
