Troopers from the 303rd Infantry Brigade have encountered and traded shots with five New People's Army (NPA) fighters while on routine security patrol in Barangay Ili in Negros Oriental Saturday morning.
The encounter took place around 8: 20 a.m.
The 303rd Infantry Brigade is a field unit of the Capiz-based 3rd Infantry Division.
Major Ray Tiongson, unit spokesperson, said the soldiers were reacting to reports of rebel elements in the area when they spotted the five rebels which triggered a five-minute firefight.
No casualties were reported on the government side.
Tiongson said it is possible that the rebels may have sustained some casualties as blood trails were seen along the latter's withdrawal route.
Meanwhile, 3rd Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Aurelio Baladad instructed his men in the field to strictly follow the rule of law while conducting follow-on operations in the area.
“Our persistent call for peace with the people shall continue. We are likewise sending upon them (NPA) to listen to this call of the people,” he added.
