South Korea will decommission one of its Pohang-class corvettes by yearend for donation to the Philippine Navy by yearend, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
The assurance was made to Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin by his South Korean counterpart, Minister Kim Kwang-jin, during a meeting on May 30, the Philippine embassy in Seoul reported.
Gazmin visited South Korea from May 29 to 31.
The donation follows a landing craft utility and 16 rubber boats given by the South Korean navy to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Gazmin thanked the South Koreans for the assistance they have given toward rehabilitation areas devastated by super typhoon Yolanda and said the Korean military contingent based in Tacloban City “are much loved after establishing good rapport with the local population,” a DFA statement said.
Kim said the Tacloban contingent was “a small token compared with the great contribution of Filipino troops during the Korean War.”
