A soldier was killed and three others, including an officer, were wounded when an improvised explosive device blasted their vehicle in Datu Unsay town, Maguindanao Thursday.
Abu Misri Mama, spokesman of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, claimed responsibility for the ambush.
The BIFF broke away from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front after rejecting peace negotiations with government to pursue their struggle for secession.
Hours after the noontime explosion, a clash also broke out between soldiers and BIFF gunmen in Barangay Satan, on the boundary of Datu Unsay and Shariff Aguak towns.
Colonel Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the 6th Infantry Division, said at least two rebels were wounded, adding that the BIFF could have suffered more casualties after the Army called in artillery on the gunmen as they retreated into the forests.
Colonel Donald Hongitan, commander of the 45th Infantry Battalion, said Lieutenant Lemuel Manicdo, Technical Sergeant Pio Hunuldang, Corporal Joel Kanseran and a Private First Class Tabihe were returning from a civil military operation in Camp Omar when the roadside bomb went off in Barangay Maitumaig just past noon.
Tabihe, who was driving, was killed immediately.
The wounded soldiers are being treated at the Camp Siongco hospital.
An explosive ordnance disposal team said the IED was crafted from a 105mm howitzer shell and was triggered by a cellular phone.
Last month, Colonel Gener del Rosario, the newly assigned commander of the 1st Mechanized Brigade, survived an IED attack on his convoy on the Meta Bridge, also in Datu Unsay, that killed a member of his security detail and wounded four others.
