MANILA – A party-list legislator on Sunday recommended to incoming Education secretary, Senator Sonny Angara, to include in the national history curriculum the territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) arbitral ruling.
Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party-List Rep. Margarita Nograles said the topics will provide students with a deeper understanding of the geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia and the importance of upholding the rule of law in international relations.
"Educating our youth about the significant issues surrounding our territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea is crucial for fostering a well-informed citizenry and cultivating a sense of national pride and responsibility," she explained.
Filipino students must be taught comprehensively about the UNCLOS 2016 arbitral ruling, she said, adding that it is a pivotal moment that affirmed the country’s sovereign rights over territories that are being claimed by China.
"Our young Filipinos should be aware of the legal and historical context of our territorial claims to better appreciate the efforts of our government and diplomats in defending our sovereignty," she added.
Meanwhile, she expressed her full support for the appointment of Angara as the new head of the Department of Education.
"Senator Angara’s extensive experience in public service, his advocacy for education, and his proven leadership make him exceptionally qualified for this role. I am confident that under his stewardship, our educational system will continue to advance and address the evolving needs of our nation," Nograles said.
