Posted to Kalinaw News (Feb 16, 2020): Top ranking NPAs die in firefight with Army and Police in Ilocos Sur (By 7th Infantry Division)

Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija – Three leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army’s Komiteng Larangang Gerilya (KLG) South Ilocos Sur (SIS) died in a firefight with troops of the 81st Infantry (Spartan) Battalion at Barangay Namatican, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur on the evening of February 13, 2020.

Acting on a report of armed persons suspiciously moving in Barangay Namatican, elements of the 81IB, along with the personnel of Sta. Lucia Municipal Police Station (MPS), went to inspect the said area.

Upon noticing the presence of the government security forces, the armed group immediately opened fire. The firefight that ensued resulted to the deaths of alias Guyo, identified as the Secretary of KLG SIS; alias Unor, the Deputy Secretary of the same group; and, alias Ricky, who is the Political Officer/Guide of KLG SIS.

Recovered from the scene of encounter were two caliber .45 pistols and one fragmentation grenade.

According to Colonel Audrey L. Pasia, Commander of the 702nd Infantry (Defender) Brigade, KLG SIS is one of the strongest NPA unit in Region 1 which has been causing terror in the area for decades. Region 1 covers the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan and La Union that is under the area of responsibility of the 702Bde. Consequently, under the 702Bde is the 81IB which secures Ilocos Sur. Colonel Pasia said that with the fall of KLG SIS’s top leaders, the group will be crippled, leading to its eventual downfall.

“This is the break that we have been waiting for. This is the result of the hard work of our troops who exhorted all legal means to curb local terrorism in Ilocos Sur, along with the people who trusted us; and of the Police of course, who has been steadily working with us to bring about peace in the Region,” Major General Lenard T. Agustin said. He is the Commander of the Army’s 7th Infantry “Kaugnay” Division (7ID) which is the mother unit of the 702Bde.

Leaving a message for the remaining members of KLG SIS, Major General Agustin said that the mission now of the Kaugnay Division is to ensure that KLG SIS will “be weakened until it is obliterated”, as the Army will continue to conduct internal security operations and support to law enforcement operations with its PNP counterparts and the stakeholders in Ilocos Sur. “So, to the members of KLG SIS, please surrender now as we will most definitely intensify our operation
