The deployment of one of the Philippine Navy's biggest ship, the strategic sealift vessel BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602), to the ongoing relief missions for communities severely affected by the series of earthquakes in Mindanao, highlights the PN's commitment to provide assistance to Filipino disaster victims.
This was emphasized by PN public affairs office chief, Lt. Commander Maria Christina Roxas, as the BRP Davao Del Sur left Pier 15, Manila South Harbor Tuesday for deployment to Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao in Davao to help in the humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions in the quake-battered island.
"It is a manifestation of the Philippine Navy being always ready and committed to provide prompt assistance to our disaster-stricken fellow Filipinos in order to alleviate them from their current ordeals," she said in a statement late Wednesday.
The BRP Davao Del Sur carried around 56 tons of assorted cargoes and equipment which include mobile kitchens, cargo trucks and towable water treatment trucks from the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division, and concessionaires Manila Water and Maynilad.
The deployment of the ship came shortly after the PN flag-officer-in-command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad issued a directive for the deployment of naval assets to accommodate more relief goods and cargoes from Luzon and Visayas pick-up points bound for Davao and to provide humanitarian assistance and transport mission in the affected areas of earthquakes in Mindanao.
The BRP Davao Del Sur, which was commissioned in May 2017, has a displacement of 7,200 tons, and a length of 120 meters.
The ship has a beam of 21 meters, draft of five meters and can carry a payload of 2,800 tons and has a cruising speed of 13 knots and maximum speed of 16 knots.
BRP Davao Del Sur can carry 500 troops, two rigid-hull inflatable boats, two landing craft units and three helicopters.
