ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Three soldiers were awarded the medal for gallantry in action against the Islamic State-linked Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Basilan and Sulu provinces.

Maj. Arvin John Encinas, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) spokesperson, said Wednesday the Wounded Personnel Medal (WPM) was accorded to Sgt. Vicente Castro Jr., Cpl. Junnifer Ordeniza, and PFC Keferd Osngar.

Castro sustained wounds during an encounter involving the elements of the 1st Brigade Combat Team against some 30 ASG bandits led by Hajan Sawadjaan on Sept. 11 in Barangay Latih, Patikul, Sulu.

Ordeniza suffered injuries during an encounter between the troops of the Army’s 18th Infantry Battalion against the ASG bandits on August 18 in Barangay Campo Uno, Lamitan City, Basilan.

Osngar was wounded during an encounter involving the 41st Infantry Battalion and some 40 ASG bandits led by sub-leaders Almujer Yadah, Ben Tattoh, and Apo Hike on Sept. 10 in Sitio Tubig Pansol, Barangay Langhub, Patikul, Sulu.

The Westmincom also extended financial assistance to the soldiers who were admitted at the Camp Navarro General Hospital in this city.

“I give my highest commendations to these soldiers for their bravery and sacrifice for our country and for the people,” said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Westmincom chief, who led the awarding of medal on Monday.

“Truly they are our modern-day heroes who are risking their lives to keep their fellow Filipinos safe and secured,” Sobejana added.
