The military has sent peacekeeping forces to a town
bordering North Cotabato and Maguindanao after
clashes erupted involving armed groups.
Capt. Calvin Macatangay, military's 602nd Infantry Brigade
spokesman, said soldiers were sent to back the Tulunan police.
On Thursday afternoon, residents in the village of Maybola
in Tulunan reported to police the shooting war between villagers and armed men
from Maguindanao.
It was not clear what triggered the armed skirmishes, Senior
Inspector Ronnie Dillera, the town police station commander, told reporters.
"The report is still sketchy," he said, adding
that armed conflicts have occurred in the village in the past due to land
problem.
He could not say if both sides have suffered casualties.
Police checkpoints have been put up around the Poblacion of
Tulunan, a farming community of North Cotabato
situated in the boundary with Maguidnanao.
No massive evacuation of residents in the area was reported
so far.
