Bayan Muna raises alarm over US fuel transfer to Subic Bay, expressing concerns about national security.
Executive VP Carlos Zarate warns of potential risks, highlighting the lack of transparency from the Department of National Defense.
The Philippines could unwittingly become entangled in US-initiated conflicts, jeopardizing the safety of its people.
Bayan Muna expressed grave concern on Friday over the reported fuel transfer from the US military facility in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii via the tanker Yosemite Trader to a commercial storage facility in Subic Bay, Zambales.
Bayan Muna Executive Vice President Carlos Isagani Zarate said that once again the Philippines has turned into a storage facility for US war supplies.
He cautioned that this situation could potentially make the Philippines a target for enemies of the United States.
“The Philippines is in danger of once again being dragged into US-initiated armed conflicts with other countries that are not necessarily the enemies of the Filipino people,” Zarate warned.
During the Vietnam War, Zarate noted, the US military base in the country was used in America’s “interventionist war.”
Zarate has questioned the lack of transparency and information regarding the fuel shipment, particularly on the part of the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
He also stressed the need for the “utmost safety and security measures, as well as environmental and health assessments, should the fuel transfer be allowed in the future. The potential risks associated with such large-scale transfers must be addressed to protect the well-being of the Filipino people and the environment.”
The former lawmaker also noted that Subic Bay is not among the bases designated under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

[Note: Bayan Muna (People First) is a Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) partylist political party and communist political front. The group is a political spin-off from the main CPP mulitisectoral umbrella front organization the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN-New Patriotic Alliance). Bayan Muna and other associated CPP front organizations routinely opposed any US military presence in the Philippines.]
