Two suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were captured on Sunday in Barangay Cahigon, Calinog town.
They were Lilibeth Gimong and Nelson Gimong Jr., both under the SDG Igabon Platoon, Central Front, Komiteng-Rehiyon Panay, according to Army Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Jason Estrada, commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (12IB).
The two were riding a motorcycle around 1 p.m. when intercepted by the 12IB troops and personnel of the Calinog police station.
Tipsters told the authorities about the rebels’ presence.
Recovered from them were a homemade M16 pistol, two rifle grenades, one hand grenade, three M16 ammunitions, assorted medical supplies, a cellphone, personal belongings, and identification cards.
Cases for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and RA 9516 or illegal possession, manufacture, dealing in acquisition or disposition of firearms, ammunition or explosives would be filed against the suspects.
They were detained at the Calinog police station.
The younger Gimong also has a pending case in court: attempted murder with Criminal Case No. C-17-1863-10 with a P120,000 recommended bail.
Major General Benedict Arevalo, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, commended his men and the police.
“The capture of the two rebels will not be the last. Expect more inter-agency operations against terrorists,” Arevalo said.
