CAMP BANCASI, Butuan City – Soldiers of the Army’s 901st Infantry Brigade (901st IB), led by Brig. Gen. Gabriel C. Viray, arrived in Surigao del Norte over the weekend to augment the government forces in wiping out the remaining Communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province.
The 901st IB was pulled out of Cotabato, and reassigned in Surigao del Norte to augment the 402nd Infantry Brigade (402nd IB) in crushing the remaining NPA rebels in Surigao del Norte and neighboring areas.
Fourth Infantry Division (4th ID) Commanding General Maj. Gen. Andres C. Centino said soldiers from the 901st Brigade will augment the military forces’ operations to defeat the terrorist NPA remnants who were on the ”verge of irreversible collapse”.
“My order is to crush and dismantle the remaining godless Communist guerilla front in that area,” the 4th ID chief, whose area of operations are Northeastern and Northern Mindanao said.
The 901st Brigade was formally welcomed by the top military commanders in the area and some selected local officials at the Surigao City Airport.
Viray said his men was combat ready, and focused to deliver the finishing blows against insurgency in the province.
With the additional forces, the 901st Brigade commander appealed to the remaining NPA guerillas to surrender peacefully while they still have time.
“They (NPAs) can avail of the government’s peace livelihood and development program, if they lay down their arms peacefully,” Viray added.
