Two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion in Barangay Balonai, Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur at around 11 a.m. Monday, May 11.
The bodies of the two unidentified insurgents were recovered with their AK47 assault rifles, two bandoliers with magazines and ammunitions and a backpack by the government troops after the 15-minute firefight.

There was no reported casualty on the government side.
53rd Infantry Battalion commander Lt Col Jo-ar Herrera disclosed that they were able to engage the Communist rebels in the gun battle after receiving information from local residents who were alarmed by the NPAs’ presence in their communities.
“The people are already proactive in their roles in denouncing the terroristic acts of the NPAs in their barangays,” said Herrera.
Troops were still conducting a pursuit operation to take out the fleeing members of the terrorist group.
