Ipil, ZSP – The Commander of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division today awarded the 44th Infantry Battalion personnel who repelled the NPA attack in Barangay Balagon, Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay last April 1.
Major General Gene M Ponio conferred the award Military Merit Medal with Spearhead Device
to ten personnel of 44IB for their heroic achievement and gallantry in action preventing the attack of combined elements of Guerilla Front Feliciano A and Guerilla Front 13 of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Lt. Col. Don Templonuevo, Commanding Officer of 44IB, recalled how the troops foiled the NPA attack after they have conducted community visitation and information dissemination on COVID-19 crisis in far-flung areas of Siay.
“After the clash, the troops were able to discover a dead cadaver of NPA identified as Elmar Sumasay alyas Junmar and recovered two M16 assault rifles,” LtCol Don Templonuevo, Commanding Officer, 44IB.
MGen Ponio during his speech commended the troops for demonstrating high-level of professionalism and display of tactical and technical expertise in outmaneuvering the enemy under enemy fire and extreme pressure.
“Although there has been a delay in awarding and recognizing your efforts due to the COVID-19 crisis, rest assured that this command will give due credit to your contributions in attaining the peace in Zamboanga Peninsula,” MGen Ponio added.
Also present during the ceremony were Col Leonel Nicolas, Commander, 102nd Infantry Brigade and Hon. Roselyn V Silva, Municipal Mayor, Imelda, ZSP.
