Warring clans surrendered on Thursday 19 assorted loose firearms to the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion in Tubaran, Lanao del Sur, officials said.
Lt. Col. Ian Noel Ignes, Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion commander, said Tubaran Mayor Khaledyassin Papandayan has “played a great role in the surrender of firearms".
“Mayor Papandayan painstakingly negotiated with the families with the assistance of village elders, traditional leaders, imams, and ulamas to bring about a resolution to the conflict and to bring peace to their municipality,” Ignes said.
Ignes said the assorted firearms that were surrendered included one M-14 and two .30-caliber M1 Garand rifles, one shotgun, 11 handguns, and five grenade launchers.
Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade acting commander, attributed the accomplishment “to the peace-loving local chief executives, constituents and stakeholders of Lanao del Sur”.
“We will continuously collaborate with them to encourage other warring clans to settle their disputes and surrender their loose firearms to make their communities peaceful and secured,” Cuerpo said.
Maj. Gen. Roberto Ancan, Army’s 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan (the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces) commander, lauded the troops and the local chief executives for the successful surrender of loose firearms.
Ancan said his command, in collaboration with the local government units and other stakeholders, remains steadfast in its commitment to attain just and lasting peace “in our area of operation through our campaign against loose firearms”.
