The Philippine National Police maintained yesterday that the 14 persons killed in Negros Oriental Saturday fought back while being served court-issued search warrants for illegal possession of firearms.
The Oplan Sauron 2ptO of the Police Regional Office 7 and the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office on Saturday left 14 dead, including two barangay captains, while 16 others were arrested and 21 assorted firearms, explosives and subversive documents were recovered, Police Col. Raul Tacaca, Neg. Or. provincial police director, said.
Tacaca said those killed fought back against the police, that also resulted in the injury of Police Cpl. Ian Puerto, a trooper of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 7 who was hit in the right leg during police operations in Santa Catallina, Negros Oriental.
Those killed were either members of the NPA Special Partisan Unit or supporters of the CPP-NPA, based on testimonies of police personnel, who survived the NPA liquidation attempts, Tacaca claimed.
Of the 14 persons killed, eight were in Canlaon City, four in Manjuyod and two in Santa Catalina, all in Negros Oriental.
Among those killed were Panciao barangay chairman Sunny Palagtiw and Candabong barangay captain Eric Acabal, in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental, a police report showed.
The others killed were identified by the police as Steve Arapoc, Manolo Martin, brothers Edgardo and Esmael Avelino, Rogelio Recomono and his son, Ricky, Genes Palmares, Ano Enojo Rapada, Gonzalo Rosales, Franklin Lariosa, and Melchor and Mario Pañares.
On December 27 last year, six farmers also died, while more than 50 were arrested Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, as the police, backed by the Philippine Army, also served search warrants against targeted drug personalities and members of the CPP-NPA in line with the Oplan Sauron campaign plan of the PNP.
Police Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas, Central Visayas police director, in his report to Police Director General Oscar Albayalde, said that Oplan Sauron 2ptO is aimed at arresting communist rebels involved in atrocities, such as the assassination of retired Army MSgt. Celso Pedochino, the foiled attack on the Canlaon City Police Station on March 17, attempts to kill Police Senior Master Sgt. Humprey Teves and PSMSgt Cadiz Marjun in Manjuyod, and Patrolman Paul Tarugo in Canlaon City.
Of the 36 search warrants served by the police, Sinas said 34 of them yielded positive results, while three suspects managed to escape.
The recovered firearms and explosives, included two rifle grenades, two fragmentation grenades, seven .45 caliber pistols, thirteen .38 caliber revolvers, one 357 Magnum revolver, two shotsguns, a homemade rifle, and one other firearm, 114 assorted ammunition, six magazines of firearms, four cellular phones and subversive documents.
Also arrested were Henrico Martin, Azucena Avelino Garubat, Corazon Javier, Amorgena Caballero, Zaldy Dumasog, Elpedio Remando Vallespin, Rene Boy Toting Kanyapaygo, Marvin Baldado Remoto, Nestor Lanja Kadusale, Welmer Cadilenia Ejercito, Ranel Dingcol Montecino, Julio Balasabas Dayupay, Ana Marie Dayoha, Eddie Silva, Edgardo Salado Marinay Jr. and Joraldine Relobello.
Sinas added that the 14 suspects who engaged the PNP in shootouts during the implementation of the search warrants, were declared dead on arrival in hospitals, where they were brought.
Tacaca said the PNP will welcome charges filed against them, as the 14 were killed in legitimate police operations.
