CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao – Police lauded Tuesday local leaders of Madalum, Lanao del Sur, who helped police and military officials in convincing a member of the Maute local terror group to surrender recently.

A certain “Pacong”, the brother of a deceased Daulah Islamiyah fighter who died during the Marawi siege, yielded to the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion in Madalum, Lanao del Sur, on April 17.

Brig. Gen. Graciano Mijares, regional police director for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said Pacong vowed to help authorities convince his companions to also surrender.

Mijares said both the military and the police in Lanao del Sur have been using a diplomatic approach to convince the radicals to surrender, but not ruling out "law enforcement operations" when necessary.

“I have ordered the Lanao del Sur police provincial office and all municipal police stations, including the mobile force battalion, to continue hunting down remnants of the Maute terror group, but remain open to their peaceful surrender,” he said.

After his surrender, Pacong revealed he was devastated by the death of his brother who was recruited by the Maute brothers in Butig, a town in Lanao del Sur.

Pacong handed over an M-653 rifle with magazine and ammunition.

Along with Pacong’s surrender, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, also led the turn-over of three unlicensed high-powered guns in support of the government’s campaign against loose firearms.

Pangandaman turned over to Lt. Colonel Edgar Allan Villanueva, the 49th IB commander, two rocket-propelled grenades, a Colt M203 rifle, and ammunition.
