From Katropa DWDD-CRS Virtual RTV Facebook page (Mar 26, 2019): READ| Accused in Marawi crisis found guilty for violating the International Humanitarian Law and Rebellion
“Justice is Served!” – A satisfying and rewarding phrase that described the sentiments of the CIDG detectives who played a vital role during the Marawi Crisis when one of the suspects in that crisis was finally convicted by imprisonment on March 15, 2019 at around 1:50 PM at the Hall of Justice, Gen. Santos ...Avenue, Upper Bicutan, Taguig City.
In the sala of Hon. Judge Felix Reyes, Acting Presiding Judge of RTC Br. 70, Taguig City, the verdict was read against one JUNAID MACAUYAG AWAL a.k.a. “Vice/Vice Junaid” or “Junaid Romato”, who was found guilty for the crime of violation of RA 9851 (The Philippine Act on Crimes against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide and other crimes against Humanity) and for the crime of Rebellion.
Awal was sentenced to a penalty of Reclusion Perpetua or life imprisonment for the case of RA 9851 and imprisonment ranging from the minimum period of eight (8) years and one (1) day of prision mayor to a maximum period of fourteen (14) years, 8 months and 1 day of reclusion temporal for the case of Rebellion.
In earlier reports submitted to PDIR AMADOR V CORPUS, CIDG Director, Awal was then an active member of an organized armed group known as the “Maute-ISIS” local terrorist group engaged in violent armed conflict in Marawi City including a widespread attack directed against the civilian population. The accused was one of the Maute-ISIS who took women and minor girls as captives and held them as their "Sabaya" or sex slaves.
Awal was arrested in the main battle area as he tried to extricate himself by joining the hostages as they escaped from the said armed group sometime on October 2017.
