5 arrested ‘NPA recruits’ freed from police custody

From the Visayan Daily Star (Oct 26): 5 arrested ‘NPA recruits’ freed from police custody

The five members of the New People’s Army, who were intercepted and arrested Monday in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, were freed from police custody Wednesday, after the lapse of the 36-hour reglementary period of detention, Army spokesman Capt. Ruel Llanes disclosed yesterday.

The apprehension of five suspects, who admitted to be newly-recruited members of the New People’s Army, also led to the seizure of six homemade short firearms, five improvised shotguns, 200 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition, two hand grenades, 10 live ammunition for shotguns and one IED (improvised explosives device).

Nabbed and later released by the police were Roberto Nemeño, alias Ka Marlon, 26; Jimboy Padilla, alias Ka Redem, 18; Remy Fenis, alias Ka Badong, 25; Henry Nemeño, alias Rodel,30; and Jimmy dela Cruz, 20, alias Gohan Michael, all residents of Purok Holdam, Sitio Bedio in Brgy. Codcod, San Carlos City.

The five self-confessed NPA members were intercepted unarmed by the joint elements of the 79th Infantry Battalion and 6th Special Action Battalion troopers of the PNP, while conducting combat operations in the area.

Llanes said the five NPA members later helped government troopers in locating their comrades, who managed to escape.

But the fleeing NPA members left behind the assorted firearms and explosives, as well as three backpacks containing medical paraphernalia and subversive documents.

Llanes admitted that the delay in bringing the five arrested NPA members to the lowlands led to lapse of the prescribed reglementary period of detention.
